Breaking the Silence opens with an ominous still of a US soldier holding a pistol to the face of a young Arab. Stills of blooded civilians and mutilated corpses are shown in slow succession as Pilgers monotonous narration asks, “What are the real aims of this war?” The implication is obvious: the US is fighting a war in an effort to terrorize and murder innocent civilians. What has Pilger stated? Nothing, and this is the art of pilgerism. Pilger is the master of creating a false impression through suggestion and juxtaposition, and doing so without uttering a single false word. Throughout the film, Pilger carefully suggest similarity between the US and Nazi Germany, he does so without ever making a direct parallel.
